Berlin, 16 January 2018

“We can’t think of any better place in the world than Eurosonic to premiere the new songs we’ve been working on for the past several months.” The quartet Kytes from Munich will be performing at the legendary music club Vera. Winners of the 2016 New Music Award, they’re one of sixteen promising newcomer acts from Germany at Eurosonic, the European showcase festival in Groningen, Netherlands. After becoming established in Germany, Kytes and its management hope Eurosonic will help the band gain a foothold on the international stage in front of an expert audience with numerous potential partners. Bookers representing more than 400 music festivals are among the 4,200 Eurosonic conference attendees. The Kytes concert will additionally be recorded for EBU Music/Euroradio, a joint project of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Germany’s WDR Broadcasting and its Rockpalast show is one of many other entities that will be recording the various concerts.

KYTES

Ina Keßler, Initiative Musik Managing Director: “The sixteen bands and solo artists selected for this year’s Eurosonic present a wonderful cross-section of the variety and quality found in Germany’s music scene, offering plenty of international potential. Performances in Groningen can become an important springboard for building an international career, which is yet another reason we’re supporting the event.” For their gigs at Eurosonic 2018, Ace Tee & Kwam. E (Berlin), Bergfilm (Cologne), Dillon (Berlin), Hope (Berlin), Kytes (Munich), Leoniden (Kiel), Lilly Among Clouds (Würzburg) and Suff Daddy & the Lunchbirds (Berlin) are receiving travel subsidies through the Short-Tour Funding programme. Furthermore, Berlin singer Alice Merton will receive the European Border Breakers Award for her success outside of Germany. This year’s German bands and artists play in a wide variety of musical styles. This includes Leipzig’s heavy metal rockers Walking Dead on Broadway, the eleven-member techno marching band Meute from Hamburg, and Kiel-based indie pop band Leoniden.

INA KESSLER

At Eurosonic, the Berlin post-rock band Hope is presenting material from its eponymous debut album, which was released on Haldern Pop Recordings in autumn 2017. “We’re very excited to see what Groningen has in store to bring Hope a little bit further out into the world. Last year’s summer festivals were insane and we hope that we can make some new contacts in this direction at Eurosonic. We’d love to get out to more festivals and club concerts within Europe, for instance at the Le Guess Who? in the Netherlands, the Dour Festival in Belgium, Roskilde in Denmark and Glastonbury in England. Every last one of them paradisiacal, huge names,” says Hope guitarist Phillip Staffa.

HOPE

Initiative Musik is Germany’s official partner for the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP). This EU promotional programme and the European Export Office create additional incentives for booking up-and-coming European artists from the Eurosonic programme with financial grants for participating festivals. In 2017, ETEP supported a total of 424 shows by 164 bands, including international shows for the German bands Roosevelt (Cologne), White Wine (Leipzig) and Gurr (Berlin). Organised under the aegis of the Noorderslag Foundation and BUMA Cultuur, more than 100 festivals from 31 countries take part in this programme, including 19 German festivals. ETEP newcomers this year include the Immergut Festival in Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania, and the Summer Breeze Open Air in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria. Since its premiere in 2011, the Maifeld Derby in Mannheim has regularly been booking bands from the Eurosonic programme and has been an ETEP festival since 2017.

Timo Kumpf, Maifeld Derby Managing Director: “It’s important for us to present new international artists as part of the Maifeld Derby. Since 2011 we’ve been booking between four and eight bands from the Eurosonic programme every year, including Hozier, Aurora and Soak. ETEP sponsors us with up to 3,200 euros annually. Along with the financial support, the programme also connects us to other international festivals in a similar vein. As part of the Eurosonic Festival we get to discover many new bands and meet kindred spirits, all of whom often make an impact on our festival year. Overall, I especially hope that the financial support for innovative and curated pop festivals will be increased in the future, otherwise, sooner or later, the cultural diversity that such festivals make a meaningful contribution to will be lost.”

The project resources for Initiative Musik participating in ETEP and the Short-Tour Funding programme are provided from the budget of the German Federal Government’s Representative for Cultural and Media Affairs (BKM). Applications for Short-Tour Funding are possible up to five weeks before the start of a concert tour. Ninety-four short-tour funding awards were approved in 2017. For showcase performances and support tours, a subsidy in the form of a fixed-amount financing per band member of up to 600 euros to other countries within Europe and up to 1,000 euros outside of Europe is possible. Bands may also apply for an additional marketing subsidy of up to 1,000 euros. Sponsorship may not exceed more than 50 per cent of the total costs.

Förderer Initiative Musik

Initiative Musik is the federal government’s funding agency that supports the music industry for rock, pop, and jazz in Germany. Initiative Musik’s support programmes offer artists financial support to indirectly support their professional development. One of its main goals is to promote and support young musical talent, musicians with immigrant backgrounds, and disseminating music from Germany on a national level and on foreign markets. Another focus is the support of music venues that significantly contribute to maintaining cultural diversity within Germany with their work.

Initiative Musik is supported by the German Society for the Administration of Neighbouring Rights (GVL), the German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat), and the German Music Authors’ Society (GEMA). The bulk of the project’s funding is provided by the German Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media.
