WUNDERBAR – GERMANY AT SXSW 2018
Record German Participation at the South by Southwest Music Festival

  • 24 solo artists and bands from Germany at the world’s largest showcase festival, including Ace Tee, Gato Preto, Lali Puna, Perel and Kelvyn Colt
  • WUNDERBAR Next Generation Krautrock—with a panel for the film Conny Plank—The Potential of Noise and live performances by MEUTE, Joasihno, Blackberries and Sea Moya
  • Musicboard Berlin, Reeperbahn Festival and WOMEX with additional showcases in the SXSW Music Program

Berlin, March 6, 2018

This year the head booker for SXSW, James Minor, has selected 24 bands and solo artists from Germany for the world’s largest showcase festival: “From the sci-fi techno of DFA’s Perel, to the 80s R&B of Ace Tee, the stark and dramatic Gemma Ray, to Morr Music electro-pop chanteuse Lali Puna, SXSW could not be more pleased to share the diverse sounds of Germany with the world.”

Initiative Musik Advisory Board Chairman Prof. Dieter Gorny will again be personally attending SXSW in 2018 to discuss the symbiosis of technology and music among other things: “The twenty-four bands represent a young German music scene that has a lot of international potential. Appearances at SXSW, particularly for newcomers, can be an important stepping-stone for entering the North American market. Initiative Musik is very pleased to be supporting them in their activities for building international careers.”

Prof. Dieter Gorny

The keyboardist and singer Valerie Trebeljahr and her band, Lali Puna, are playing four concerts in Austin, Texas. Two of the gigs for the trio from Munich, who are being supported by the City of Munich and Initiative Musik for the performance trip to SXSW, will be during the SXSW Music Opening Party and Munich Music Night in GERMAN HAUS. Among the musicians from Germany are acts that have already toured America multiple times such as Fenster, Lali Puna and Mary Ocher as well as many newcomers who will be performing in the United States for the first time.

Lali Puna

Initiative Musik is also hosting a very special WUNDERBAR Music Day in GERMAN HAUS of “Next Generation Krautrock,” dedicated to this exceptional German sound. Hamburg-based marching band MEUTE is opening this theme day, playing its new interpretations of house and techno pieces impressively transformed through their brass instruments. Following them, guests can look forward to an expert panel discussing the documentary film Conny Plank—The Potential of Noise, which is also being screened as part of the SXSW Film Festival in the “24 Beats per Second” section.

“This is our North American premiere and, to be honest, it’s like a dream come true. Conny has so many fans in the US, and also for Stephan Plank, Conny’s son, and director Reto Caduff it was a matter of the heart to be able to film in the US, too. They were all here in Conny’s studio, in Wolperath near Cologne, including DEVO and Whodini—straight from Brooklyn or Los Angeles to the pure countryside—at Conny’s farm,” says Milena Fessmann, radio presenter and co-producer of the film.

Milena Fessmann

Speakers at GERMAN HAUS include the British musician Midge Ure of Ultravox and Gerald Casale from the American band DEVO, who will talk about their collaboration with the German music producer and his legendary studio near Cologne. Conny Plank worked as a music producer for numerous bands including Kraftwerk, the Scorpions, Herbert Grönemeyer, Gianna Nannini and the Eurythmics. To bring the WUNDERBAR Music Day Next Generation Krautrock event to a close, the bands Joasihno (from Munich), the Blackberries (from Solingen and Cologne), and Sea Moya (from Mannheim) will all be performing. All three of these bands were inspired by Conny Plank’s work.

Initiative Musik is sponsoring 15 of the 24 German acts with their export activities for SXSW. The bands are being supporting through the Short Tour Grants with funds from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media or funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Along with the three evenings of music and the WUNDERBAR Music Day in GERMAN HAUS, there will also be showcases in the SXSW Music Program by the Musicboard Berlin, the Reeperbahn Festival and the WOMEX world music trade show

SXSW brings together festivals, conferences and exhibitions for music, film and interactive topics. The German presentation at SXSW is the largest appearance of German cultural and creative industries outside of Germany. SXSW has been taking place since 1987 in Austin, Texas. Around 70,000 professionals from more than 90 countries attend SXSW every year. More than one thousand professionals from Germany will be attending SXSW in 2018.

WUNDERBAR—GERMANY AT SXSW is being organized by Initiative Musik for the ninth time running. This project is part of the Foreign Trade-Fair Program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. GERMAN HAUSis made possible through the support of Federal Government’s Cultural and Creative Industries Initiative and contributions from the Federal States of Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Hamburg, Hessen, Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the cities of Hanover and Munich. Additional contributors to the joint SXSW presentation include the German Consulate General in Houston, the Austrian export organization Advantage Austria and MusicTech Germany as well as numerous partners from the private sector.

PRESS STATEMENTS ABOUT GERMANY AT SXSW MUSIC 2018

Ace Tee, Hamburg

I love building bridges. Especially during times like these, I want to connect people with my music. And it’s very important that the music be positive. That’s why I want to connect with a lot of artists at SXSW and win them over about my vision.

Michael Stockum about Ace Tee
Vice President Four Music, Berlin

Ace Tee radiates a vibe that has an effect far beyond country borders or language barriers. It represents an open, cool and stylish identity that we’ll now be exhibiting at SXSW.

Ace Tee

Gato Preto
Jens Damgaard—Management, Düsseldorf

Gato Preto is 100% authentic, they call their sound “Afrofuturistic Bass”— a mix of African rhythms, Portuguese elements and German electro beats. Gata Misteriosa comes from a Mozambican family who escaped to Portugal in the late 1970s. And Lee’s father is from Ghana, but he was born and raised in Düsseldorf, Germany, so at a very early age he absorbed the spirit of the city’s electronic music movement—influenced by the band Kraftwerk. Both grew up during the golden era of hip-hop and with 1970s funk/soul and breaks. They love George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic and the whole black African movement. And they’ve been holding on to this through today. In their stunning live shows, Gato Preto brings these elements together to create a groundbreaking Afrofuturistic rave party.

Gato Preto

Lali Puna
Valerie Trebeljahr—singer and keyboardist, Munich

I think one of the really good things about making music—aside from the large number of bad things—is that it takes you to places you have never been before. The great thing about festivals is that you can see tons of other bands for no money at all. That’s what I plan to do at SXSW when I’m not playing myself. If we play, it will sound a little bit like it always does but it will also be different because the band’s lineup has changed and I listened a lot to dance records in the past years. The aim when playing live is always to make people dance in the best case or at least move. Although I admire musicians doing exactly the opposite—like Max Richter, who is opening the music part of SXSW with “Sleep”.

Lali Puna

MEUTE
Thomas Burhorn—trumpet player and initiator, Hamburg

We’ve been blessed in both the years since our first street gig in Hamburg with a large number of incredible concerts at festivals all throughout Europe. Now we want to find out what the world looks like on the other side of the Atlantic and what the people here have to say about our interpretation of a marching band. Our hometown and Initiative Musik are both supporting us on this journey into the Wild West—that’s fantastic. We’re looking forward to see what develops from all of this.

MEUTE

Sea Moya
Elias Foerster—drummer and drum machine, Mannheim

We have unreleased music with us and are looking forward to having a great time in the SXSW ambience. We want to be a strong presence so we can exchange ideas with international people, whether it is bands or potential partners, so we can continue to expand our network..”
